Waiting restrictions - single yellow lines
No waiting during the times shown on the sign
A single yellow line along the edge of the road means you must not wait or park there during the times shown on a nearby sign. In a Controlled Parking Zone the times are on the signs where you enter the zone instead. If the sign shows no days, the restriction applies every day, including Sundays and bank holidays. Outside those times you can park there, unless another restriction applies.
Like double yellow lines, the restriction covers the road, the pavement and the verge beside the line.
When you can stop during the restricted times
- To load or unload, unless there is also a loading ban, shown by short yellow marks on the kerb: two marks mean no loading at any time, and one mark means no loading at the times on a nearby sign.
- To let passengers get in or out.
- With a Blue Badge, for up to 3 hours, displaying the badge and the blue parking clock set to the quarter hour when you arrived. Where the restriction lasts 3 hours or less, the badge covers all of it, without the clock. This does not apply where there is a loading ban, in car parks, or where parking would cause an obstruction or danger, and parts of central London have their own rules. See Blue Badge parking for the details.
Parking on a single yellow line during its times is a higher level contravention (code 01). The 10-minute grace period in England does not apply to yellow lines. To challenge a penalty, see how to fight a yellow line or loading penalty.
